VTE risk not appreciated by patients
None of the 1,000 members of the public surveyed identified hospital-acquired clots (venous thrombeombolism [VTE]) as a cause for concern when going into hospital, according to Lifeblood: The Thrombosis Charity. Lifeblood points out that hospital-acquired VTE kills around 25,000 people in the UK each year. Only half of those in the study, sponsored by Boehringer, who underwent surgery, recalled a healthcare professional discussing the risk of clots.
