One hour test for TB in development
Scientists at the Health Protection Agency (HPA) have been developing a new test which can diagnose the tuberculosis bacterium in one hour.
The World Health Organization estimated that is 2008, 1.3 million people worldwide died from TB. The current test used to identify TB involves growing bacterial culture on the mucus of a patient. The results of this test can take many weeks by which time the disease may have been passed on to many more people.
The new test in development focuses on the DNA which researchers say is present in all strains of the disease. Scientists claim that the test can spot all strains of the disease and could help to reduce the occurance and spread of the disease worldwide.
