Increased risk of Malaria in India
Malaria in Maharashtra, India
The NPA information department has received a number of queries regarding
the increased risk of malaria in the Indian state of Maharashtra, notably in
the city of Mumbai. This is following an increase in the number of reported
cases of malaria compared to the same period in 2009, with media reports
indicating that the majority of these cases have occurred in Mumbai. This
recent increase in cases has coincided with the monsoon period, which began
in June.
Travellers visiting the city of Mumbai should be advised that the risk of
malaria is still considered to remain low, and malaria chemoprophylaxis is
not usually required. Bite avoidance measures should still be adhered to,
for example the use of a DEET containing insect repellent. Travel to the
rest of the state of Maharashtra will require chemoprophylaxis, the current
recommendations being chloroquine and proguanil.
In view of the increased number of cases in this area, it would be prudent
to stress to travellers that should they become unwell on their return, they
should seek medical attention promptly, and advise their doctor that they
have visited a malarious area.
The situation in this region will continue to be monitored, and we will
notify members should there be any updates.

and Centre (NaTHNaC) here.
